from the desk of CHRIS WILEY:

Thujopsis dolobrata (False Arborvitae)

Thujopsis dolobrata is a fantastic evergreen that we propagated by cuttings from the Polly Hill Arboretum. According to Michael Dirr, it is an evergreen of great beauty, and we agree. The foliage is thicker and broader than the American arborvitae, with dark glossy green foliage above and whitish streaks on the underside. It grows up to 40 feet tall and 15 feet wide, and does not seem to be eaten much by deer. Thujopsis is hardy to zone 5 and has no significant disease or insect problems.

We also propagated from Polly Hill a dwarf cultivar which is great for foundation plantings. Similar in properties to the Thujopsis dolobrata is the Thujopsis dolobrata nana which grows to approximately 3-4 feet and can be very wide.

Come see these under-utilized beautiful evergreens and be the first to have them in your yard.       Chris
